A closer look
A root canal is a safe and effective procedure designed to save a tooth that has been severely damaged or infected. During treatment, the infected pulp inside the tooth is removed, the root canals are carefully cleaned and disinfected, and the space is sealed to prevent further infection.
It doesn't just relieve pain — it preserves your natural tooth, avoiding the need for an extraction and a replacement.
Not every toothache means you need a root canal. Pain can come from decay, a crack, a failing filling or gum problems. Dr. Massaband combines your history with an exam and X-rays to confirm the pulp is the source and that the tooth can be restored afterward. If a case is especially complex, we'll explain whether specialist input is best.

What to expect
An exam and X-rays identify the affected tooth and confirm the pulp is involved.
The tooth is thoroughly numbed and isolated so the area stays clean and you stay comfortable.
Infected tissue is removed, canals are cleaned and shaped, then filled and sealed.
A filling or — for most back teeth — a crown protects the treated tooth long-term.

Cleaning and sealing the canals treats the inside of the tooth, but the outer tooth may still need a crown for protection — especially molars and premolars. Keep your follow-up appointment and avoid heavy chewing on the tooth until the final restoration is placed.
Patient reviews
Hands down the best dentist and dental office I have ever been to. I got my teeth worked on by Dr. Massaband — she is an absolute delight. Her work is top of the line. I have always been afraid of the dentist, but the way she worked on me I didn’t feel any pain or discomfort, which is so rare to find. She really makes sure you are 100% satisfied before you walk out of her office. Staff is super friendly and the office is in a great location.
Dr. Massaband was wonderful! I brought my mom to her in an emergency state. The doctor came in early on a Sunday, was very professional and detail oriented, took great care of my mom’s complicated procedure and even followed up multiple times a day during her recovery. Very grateful to have found her!

Frequently asked questions
With modern anesthesia, most patients say a root canal feels similar to getting a filling. It's the infection that hurts — treatment relieves that pain. Some tenderness for a few days afterward is normal.
Many root canals are completed in one visit of about 60–90 minutes; some need two visits, especially with a significant infection.
Back teeth usually need a crown because they carry heavy chewing forces and become more brittle after treatment. Front teeth can sometimes be restored with a filling.
Saving your natural tooth is usually best for your bite and bone, and it's often less costly than extraction plus an implant or bridge. If a tooth can't be predictably saved, we'll discuss extraction and replacement.
Yes. Severe pain, swelling or infection can often be seen the same day. Call (818) 846-9041 — Dr. Massaband is on call 24/7 for emergencies.
