Magnolia Dentistry in Burbank accepts Blue Shield of California dental PPO plans. How non-participating dentist payments work and what to check before treatment.

Magnolia Dentistry accepts Blue Shield of California dental PPO plans. You can use your Blue Shield dental PPO benefits at our Burbank office for exams and cleanings, emergency visits, fillings, crowns, implant consultations and more. Before treatment, we check your specific plan and explain how your benefits are likely to apply.
Blue Shield of California sells dental PPO plans to individuals, families and employers across the state. Here's what to know about how they work.
How Blue Shield dental PPO plans work
Blue Shield's dental PPO plans offer more choice of dentists than its dental HMO plans, with a network that Blue Shield says includes more than 55,000 dental offices in California (Blue Shield of California). Participating dentists accept Blue Shield's allowed amount. If you see a non-participating dentist, your plan still pays a benefit, but the reimbursement may be less than the amount billed, and you may owe the difference.
Some Blue Shield plans also limit how much of the annual maximum can be used out of network. Its Medicare Supplement dental plans, for example, allow part of the annual maximum to be used with a non-network dentist (Blue Shield of California). Individual and employer plans have their own rules. We check how your Blue Shield plan applies at our office before your visit.
PPO vs. Blue Shield dental HMO
Blue Shield also offers dental HMO plans that require you to use an assigned network dentist. Magnolia Dentistry accepts PPO plans only, so dental HMO plans won't apply at our office. We also don't accept government-funded programs such as Medi-Cal Dental.
Using Blue Shield dental PPO at our office
Checkups and cleanings. Preventive visits are usually covered at the highest level. Regular visits also help you catch problems while they're simple to treat; read about our cleanings and prevention.
Emergency visits. For tooth pain, swelling or a broken tooth, call us first. We fit emergencies in the same day whenever possible, and the emergency exam and X-rays are typically covered under diagnostic benefits. See our emergency dentist page.
Root canals, crowns and implants. These usually fall under basic or major services. Because Blue Shield's individual PPO plans have annual maximums such as $1,000 or $1,500, larger treatment like an implant or several crowns can reach the maximum quickly. Our guide to PPO coverage for dental implants explains how the maximum, alternate benefits and missing tooth rules combine.
Cosmetic dentistry. Veneers and whitening are generally excluded as cosmetic. Our guide on whether dental insurance covers veneers explains where restorative coverage may still help.
