Burbank Dentist That Accepts MetLife Dental PPO

Magnolia Dentistry in Burbank accepts MetLife PDP dental PPO plans. How negotiated fees and R&C charges affect your cost for crowns and implants.

Dentist reviewing dental X-rays with a patient during a checkup

Magnolia Dentistry accepts MetLife dental PPO plans, including plans that use MetLife's Preferred Dentist Program (PDP) network. You can use your MetLife benefits at our Burbank office for checkups, emergency care, crowns, implant consultations and more. Before treatment, we check your plan and explain what MetLife is likely to pay.

MetLife plans use a few specific terms on statements and estimates. Knowing what they mean makes your costs easier to predict, especially for major treatment.

Negotiated fees vs. reasonable and customary charges

MetLife describes negotiated fees as the amounts participating PDP dentists have agreed to accept as payment in full for covered services, subject to your deductible, coinsurance and maximums (MetLife PDP plan summary, Harvey Mudd College). When you see a dentist who doesn't participate, MetLife bases its payment on the reasonable and customary (R&C) charge, generally the lowest of the dentist's actual charge, the dentist's usual charge and the charge of most dentists in the area. You're responsible for any amount above that.

Some MetLife plans pay the same percentage in and out of network; others pay less out of network. Because the basis for payment differs, the dollar difference can be larger for crowns and other major services than for a cleaning. We check how your MetLife plan applies at our office before your visit, and for larger treatment we can request a pre-treatment estimate from MetLife.

Understanding your coverage types

MetLife plans usually group services into three types:

  • Type A, preventive care such as exams, cleanings and X-rays, often covered at the highest level.
  • Type B, basic restorative care such as fillings and, on many plans, root canals and extractions.
  • Type C, major restorative care such as crowns, bridges, dentures and, where included, implants.

Your plan summary lists the percentage for each type, your deductible and your annual maximum. Major treatment is often limited more by the annual maximum than by the percentage.

Using MetLife for implants and crowns

If you're considering a dental implant or crown, check three things in your MetLife plan: whether implants are listed as covered, whether there's a missing tooth limitation, and whether an alternate benefit applies. Our guides to PPO coverage for dental implants and the missing tooth clause explain each rule. When treatment is extensive and timing is flexible, phasing it across two benefit years can make better use of your annual maximum.

Emergencies and cosmetic care

For tooth pain, swelling or a broken tooth, call us first. We fit emergencies in the same day whenever possible; see our emergency dentist page. MetLife plans generally cover the emergency exam and X-rays as preventive or diagnostic care, with treatment at your plan's Type B or Type C level.

Veneers and whitening are generally excluded as cosmetic. Some related restorative work may be covered, which we'll explain during your cosmetic consultation.

Questions patients often ask

What is MetLife PDP Plus?

PDP Plus is the name MetLife uses for its PPO dentist network on many plans. Participating dentists accept MetLife's negotiated fees for covered services.

Is Magnolia Dentistry a MetLife PDP dentist?

Network participation varies by plan. We accept MetLife dental PPO plans and will check how yours applies before your visit.

Why did MetLife pay less than I expected?

Common reasons include the deductible, coinsurance, the annual maximum, frequency limits, an alternate benefit, or, with a non-participating dentist, a reasonable and customary allowance lower than the dentist's fee.
